Story time: My now-adult son has always been fascinated by bugs and insects. He's been known to pick up insects that he knows nothing about (not the thing a mother wants to hear). I, however, have a very limited number of insects I consider touchable despite growing in appreciation and ease around most insects these days. My son was with me the day I saw this praying mantis, and of course, he offered it his hand, and after a bit of hesitancy, the mantis climbed aboard. I finally worked up the nerve and offered my hand, and he made the switch to my hand...first time holding a mantis! Of course, as it quickly made it's way up my arm, I freaked out a bit, and had my son take it back. If you've ever watched the stealth with which one of these guys catches and eats prey, maybe you can understand why I didn't want it near my face.

I grew up in Kansas, just outside of Kansas City, and while some might find the endless rolling plains to be boring, I love the open space and fantastic sunsets. I have since lived in Minnesota, Rhode Island (briefly), New Hampshire, and now reside in Massachusetts. Most of my photos were taken in New England. I started taking pictures around the age of 10, borrowing my dad's point and shoot to document my adventures during a trip to Colorado with close family friends.
