You can't see it in this image, but this Great Blue Heron is living life with one good leg. It's right leg appears to be completely dead, and this heron is using it as a "peg leg" as it has no foot either. From what I can tell, this bird is in good shape (I'm not an expert). I certainly hope that's true. I can't imagine how it affects its ability to walk in the water. I wonder if it has developed a different way to hunt; It was perched on a rock in this image.

I grew up in Kansas, just outside of Kansas City, and while some might find the endless rolling plains to be boring, I love the open space and fantastic sunsets. I have since lived in Minnesota, Rhode Island (briefly), New Hampshire, and now reside in Massachusetts. Most of my photos were taken in New England. I started taking pictures around the age of 10, borrowing my dad's point and shoot to document my adventures during a trip to Colorado with close family friends.
