Artist's Description

What do you call a dive-bombing tern during nesting season? A good parent. Least Terns lay their eggs right in the sand. Their eggs and chicks are vulnerable to all types of predators, but tern parents mount a coordinated attack against anyone or anything that enters their nesting area. Despite my efforts to keep my distance, walking as close to the water as I could, there were some very good parents who let me know how unhappy they were with me. They were quite aggressive, coming within about a foot of my head, while I waved my arms to scare them off. They're beautiful when they're mad, aren't they?

I grew up in Kansas, just outside of Kansas City, and while some might find the endless rolling plains to be boring, I love the open space and fantastic sunsets. I have since lived in Minnesota, Rhode Island (briefly), New Hampshire, and now reside in Massachusetts. Most of my photos were taken in New England. I started taking pictures around the age of 10, borrowing my dad's point and shoot to document my adventures during a trip to Colorado with close family friends. My love of animals and all of God's creation has inspired me ever since. There are so many details to discover outdoors, from bees collecting nectar to the great expanse of mountains and oceans.
