Description
I may have missed my best chance at catching the spring warbler migration, but this barn swallow just made my day. It continued to preen itself as I took pictures and slowly moved closer. I finally moved too close, and instead of flying off the metal railing, it rolled over on its side to fake injury. I had not seen a sparrow use this trick before, and I realized there must be a nest around. I have seen the barn swallows in this area before, but it never clicked with me that they were nesting under the deck. I've always seen them nest in places that weren't so close to the ground. As soon as I realized what was going on, I took a couple of quick shots and left it alone. The depth of field effect is completely natural. I barely touched this series of images in the editing process.
Image photographed in Massachusetts.
